In the initial stages of the disease, periodontal treatment usually consists of scraping, curettage and root planing. This involves removing the plaque and calculus in the pockets around the teeth, polishing and smoothing the roots. Normally, the treatment allows the gum to adhere back to the tooth or shrink enough to eliminate the pocket.

More advanced cases may require surgical treatment. The main objectives of these procedures include removing estimates of deep pockets around teeth, reduce the bags, smoothing and polishing the root surfaces and give a form appropriate to the gum for easy cleaning.

In more advanced cases where there are loose teeth, the dentist may be required to treat your bite. Additional treatments can include bite adjustments, orthodontics or placement of prostheses.

Who does periodontal treatment?
If your dentist believes that your periodontal disease needs to be treated by a specialist, you will be referred to a periodontist. With prompt treatment, proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, the vast majority of periodontal patients can keep their teeth for a lifetime.

“In Mexico 324 plants are used for the treatment of oral diseases like tooth decay, toothache, and periodontal disease (inflammation of gums and gingivitis), which constitute a public health problem in the country,” said Manuel Jimenez-Estrada, researcher Department of Natural Products, Institute of Chemistry (IQ) of the UNAM.

Since prehistoric times, some species of the genus Oxalis, plants with four petals, clover premiums are used as a remedy for diseases of the mouth, the O. cf. albicans against canker, O. and O. latifolia vallicola for stomatitis, and O. tetraphylla to stimulate the secretion of saliva.

Most illnesses, he said, is caused by anaerobic bacteria that require special environments such as the mouth. Tooth decay, caused mainly by Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus spp, and periodontal disease by Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, to mention only two cases.

Due to the recurrence of these evils in Mexico, and the need to have alternatives to cure, Jiménez-Estrada, in collaboration with Rosario and Gloria Ruiz de Esparza Gutierrez, Faculty of Dentistry, designed the project “Mexican plants with activity against bacteria causing oral diseases. ”

After a five-year study conducted in Japan with older participants, it was observed that fish oil helps fight infection and strengthens oral health in the process.

Dental examinations revealed that the absence in the diets of people of essential fatty acids omega-3 found in fish oil was strongly associated with the progression of periodontal diseases.

The new findings, published recently in the journal Nutrition, also revealed that omega-3 fatty acids were very effective against a wide range of oral bacteria.

Dr. C.B. Huang, the Oral Health Research Centre (Centre for Oral Health Research), Faculty of Dentistry, University of Kentucky, commented on the benefits of fish oil for dental health:
“The anti-bacterial hand of omega-3 fatty acids could be very important. Certainly, it could provide a new use for omega-3 fatty acids in the future.”

Following these recent findings, Dr. Huang confirmed that the ongoing investigation on the antibacterial activity of omega-3 fatty acids include the study of products like chewing gum.

The consumption of yogurt can help prevent dental diseases such as periodontitis. according to an article published in the Journal of Periodontology ‘, said the Plan of Nutrition, Health and Communication Dairy

This beneficial effect of yogurt consumption is associated with microorganisms (Lactobacillus) in yogurt and other dairy products do not contain as milk. According to Dr. Bartolomé Bonet, the Division of Pediatrics, Hospital Can Misses (Eivissa), and member of the advisory committee of the plan, the most interesting part of this study is that “shows how small dietary changes, in this case the intake of yogurt may modify the incidence of certain diseases. ”

The presence of these organisms helps reduce bacteria that cause periodontitis and care for the oral flora. “Periodontal disease may pose a higher risk of premature births, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, because, while chewing, bacteria that are present in periodontitis contact damaging the immune system organs like the pancreas or heart,” said the doctor.

Periodontitis is a dental disease that causes inflammation of the gums usually affecting 30-50 percent of the adult population, although the most serious occurring in less than 10 percent of the population.

Therefore, for Dr. Bonet, “it is necessary to maintain an adequate oral care and proper diet from an early age to help prevent oral diseases risk.”

Pregnancy calls for greater concern for health and the acquisition of a number of healthy habits to keep in perfect condition both the mother and her unborn baby. During the months of gestation not only an increased risk of developing gum disease, but if this condition becomes severe in some pregnant women may be more likely to have premature or low birth weight.

Research on women with gum disease have shown that oral bacteria can pass into the bloodstream, causing inflammation and higher levels of the hormone prostaglandin which, towards the end of pregnancy may trigger labor.

However, pregnant women can significantly reduce this risk by ensuring excellent oral hygiene.

How Sonicare FlexCare gives you the key?
The manufacturer of the sonic toothbrush most recommended by dental professionals has announced a technological breakthrough with the launch of Sonicare FlexCare. Philips Oral Healthcare has developed and improved the performance of your sonic toothbrush, to provide an outstanding plaque removal even in the most difficult to reach areas.

The importance of cleanliness and hygiene brush
In addition, Philips has designed the first UV sanitizer combined with charging the toothbrush, which helps keep brush heads safe from potentially harmful microorganisms. The sanitizer helps to kill germs, to get a brush head clean and hygienic in a cycle of only 10 minutes.

Remember your health and that of your family is most important. In addition, a beautiful smile is the best of the letters.

Sports athletes frequently involves physical contact are vulnerable to experiencing trauma to the teeth. Call it sport boxing, rugby, football and other sports at a higher risk of an accident on the face, mouth and surrounding areas. To protect the teeth and soft tissue if the accident was unavoidable, they invented a tool called a mouth guard. Generally, athletes in certain sports are required to use this tool, and there are also schools that require students to use mouth guard at a particular PE.

Besides the use in sport, mouth guard also has uses in the medical field. This tool can be used as a splint in patients with abnormal jaw joints (temporomandibular / TMJ disorder) and bruxism. Bruxism is a sliver of bad habits, especially during sleep without conscious sleeping that night, and may cause the surface of the teeth become worn. Therefore, mouth guard used to protect teeth. This tool is generally made of plastic material.

There are several types of mouth guard that can be used:
Stock / Ready made mouth guard. This species has been made in factories of various sizes but can not be adjusted to the size and shape of the wearer. This species is widely available in shops or sports stores but were not recommended because of its size that does not fit so often interfere when talking or breathing. Function is also less than optimal protection.

Mouth adapted (boil and bite). This type of material made of thermoplastic (plastic that can soften when heated and harden when cooled). How to use it is put in hot water until soft and then inserted into the mouth and tongue is formed with a finger assisted to conform to the shape of the teeth and jaw of user. However, availability in Indonesia is still relatively rare.

Custom-fitted mouth protector. Of the three types of mouth guard can be said is the best kind, because it is made individually for each patient in order to fit the size of the teeth and jaw. Generally this type are made by dentists who scored a patient’s jaw and sent to work in a dental laboratory. Because of the specific manufacturing process, the price is generally more expensive than the two types above, but provide maximum comfort and protection.
