Tooth decay and gum disease are the main oral disease which has 98 percent of Mexicans said Leopoldo Becerra, president of the organizing committee of the National Congress and International Association of Dental Mexicana (ADM).

In an interview with El Universal, the specialist said that dental problems are a public health issue that has not been given due importance.

He acknowledged that unfortunately people associate dentists with pain, because when they come to clinics have severe decay problems often arising in tooth extractions.

Among the 2.5 million Hispanics in the United States who have diabetes, many are surprised to learn about an unexpected complication associated with this condition: gum disease.

According to the Center for Disease Control (Center for Disease Control, CDC), there is an increased prevalence of gum disease among diabetics, a disease that disproportionately affects Hispanics in the United States.

Did you know?
A national survey of tests, Mexican Americans are almost twice as likely as white non-Hispanics that a doctor diagnosed diabetes.
Among Hispanics, the prevalence rates of diabetes are 8.2 percent for Cubans, 11.9 percent for Mexican Americans and 12.6 percent for Puerto Ricans.

Why Bruxism Occurs?

Bruxism, clenching and that teeth grinding is a movement disorder that has no schedule and is involuntary. It affects between 10% to 20% of the population giving both men and women. It is destructive to the dental structures, muscles and jaw joints. The main cause of this disorder is stress, a symptom common in today’s society, causing symptoms such as headache, feel tired jaw, pain in the masticatory muscles, wear on the teeth, among others.

Against this background the Extension Center Clinica Santa Maria will perform a free talk next Tuesday July 27th at 19:00 pm: “Bruxism, a bad involuntary” by Dr. William Flores, Unit Dentistry.

It is a concentration of pus that results from a bacterial infection at the root of the tooth affected by it. Usually this infection is caused by an unattended caries.

The abscess formation process begins when tooth appears on the access that frees the way for the bacteria to the root of the tooth, either by decay, the most common, or tooth mobility due to periodontal disease.

The bacteria through this open road, to infect the tooth, the pulp, the root and even the adjacent bone. At this point, the infection produces pus that collects in the area causing inflammation of the same accompanied by intense pain.

Children, Teeth, and Arkansas

The Arkansas Department of Health has the Oral Health Coalition. This nonprofit organization promotes oral health measures, increases awareness and promotes dental health initiatives to prevent and control oral diseases.

One of its programs is the Mission of Mercy. Last year volunteers attended dentists and about two thousand people in Springdale offering free dental services.

Dr. Dwight Duckworth, of the Dental Association of the State of Arkansas, was responsible for the mission.
“Statewide the biggest problem with children’s dental health is the lack of access to a dentist,” she said.
He says that this is not so much the case in Northwest Arkansas as there are a significant number of dentists.
