Sports athletes frequently involves physical contact are vulnerable to experiencing trauma to the teeth. Call it sport boxing, rugby, football and other sports at a higher risk of an accident on the face, mouth and surrounding areas. To protect the teeth and soft tissue if the accident was unavoidable, they invented a tool called a mouth guard. Generally, athletes in certain sports are required to use this tool, and there are also schools that require students to use mouth guard at a particular PE.

Besides the use in sport, mouth guard also has uses in the medical field. This tool can be used as a splint in patients with abnormal jaw joints (temporomandibular / TMJ disorder) and bruxism. Bruxism is a sliver of bad habits, especially during sleep without conscious sleeping that night, and may cause the surface of the teeth become worn. Therefore, mouth guard used to protect teeth. This tool is generally made of plastic material.

There are several types of mouth guard that can be used:
Stock / Ready made mouth guard. This species has been made in factories of various sizes but can not be adjusted to the size and shape of the wearer. This species is widely available in shops or sports stores but were not recommended because of its size that does not fit so often interfere when talking or breathing. Function is also less than optimal protection.

Mouth adapted (boil and bite). This type of material made of thermoplastic (plastic that can soften when heated and harden when cooled). How to use it is put in hot water until soft and then inserted into the mouth and tongue is formed with a finger assisted to conform to the shape of the teeth and jaw of user. However, availability in Indonesia is still relatively rare.

Custom-fitted mouth protector
. Of the three types of mouth guard can be said is the best kind, because it is made individually for each patient in order to fit the size of the teeth and jaw. Generally this type are made by dentists who scored a patient’s jaw and sent to work in a dental laboratory. Because of the specific manufacturing process, the price is generally more expensive than the two types above, but provide maximum comfort and protection.
