It is a concentration of pus that results from a bacterial infection at the root of the tooth affected by it. Usually this infection is caused by an unattended caries.

The abscess formation process begins when tooth appears on the access that frees the way for the bacteria to the root of the tooth, either by decay, the most common, or tooth mobility due to periodontal disease.

The bacteria through this open road, to infect the tooth, the pulp, the root and even the adjacent bone. At this point, the infection produces pus that collects in the area causing inflammation of the same accompanied by intense pain.

The main symptoms are:
• Severe pain and throbbing.

• Fever or mild fever.
• Swollen glands in the neck.
• Swelling of the face area affected by the abscess.

Once you have been diagnosed by a specialist, and perhaps through an X-ray examination to confirm the diagnosis, treatment involves the administration by prescription of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory, and also benefit, make mouthwash with warm water and salt.

Later, when the inflammation has subsided, it is necessary to return to the appropriate specialist for proper treatment on the affected tooth, usually performed a root canal, fillings, or cap, as needed.

  2. This is very valuable information. I think that it is necessary to inform patients of what happens becomes abscessed; then perhaps they wouldn’t see a root canal as a bad thing.
